Our Seven (yes, seven) Senses

  • SK Neighborhood Guild- Room 26 (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This event has been cancelled due to low enrollment!

Our senses can give us a great deal of information about our body, what is touching it, what is near it, and what is approaching.  For more information about the structure and functions of the seven sensory systems of touch, hearing, vision, smell, taste, vestibular, and proprioception, and activities that help foster their integration, you can check out Carol Kranowitz's Out of Sync Child series.

Monday, August 17th: Putting it all Together: Analyzing and Customizing Play Activities to Maximize Learning.

Bummer Alert!  Due to low enrollment, we have decided to save ourselves some paper, gas money, and time spent primping in order to design a series of blog posts about the topic of "activity analysis" as we call it in the OT business.  Keep an eye on the blog for ideas on how to think about play as a tool for helping your child along the path of self-discovery.  We will be talking about some of the processing, movement, and perceptual skills that an OT works on, and ideas for adjusting a play activity to give it a "just right" challenge to meet individual kids' learning needs.

Please register below to join the mailing list, and to shoot us any questions you have about this topic, so that we can address them in future posts.

Knee Jerk Reactions: How Primitive Motor Reflexes Govern Development of Coordinated Movement.

We are born with a hard-wired set of primitive reflexes that govern the development of sensory processing and movement.  As infants learn the lesson that each reflex has to teach, another one develops to further refine coordination.  If reflexes do not get integrated into purposeful movement, individuals may experience difficulties with attention, sensory processing, coordinated movement, development of strength, and other challenges.  This workshop will review a selection of reflex patterns and their role in development, as well as a few basic developmentally-based movement patterns and rhythmic movements that can help integrate those reflexes to develop more efficient movement in children and adults!
